Korea, Illinois Join Forces on Smart Grids

On the last leg of his trip to the United States, Minister of Knowledge Economy Choi Kyunghwan visited Chicago to celebrate a landmark pilot project between Korea and the State of Illinois. The project will put Korea’s smart grid technology to use and dramatically reduce energy consumption by Chicago’s skyscrapers.

As part of the public-private partnership, buildings in Chicago’s downtown core will be equipped with energy-saving equipment such as dimmer switches. In addition, a “virtual power plant project” will allow automatic two-way communication between buildings and energy suppliers.

Two major Korean IT companies—KT and LG Electronics—are leading the pilot project, while the Korea Development Bank and Kookmin Bank are providing the initial investment. KT and LG Electronics also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago, under which older buildings in Chicago will be equipped with energy-saving features using smart grid technology.
