New Nuclear Reactor Unveiled at Shin-Kori Vice Minister for Trade and Energy Kim Young Hak and Mohamed Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, were among nearly 250 dignitaries in attendance at the Shin-Kori nuclear site last week to celebrate the completion of Korea’s first indigenous 1,400-megawatt Advanced Power Reactor. It was a crucial step in the construction of a third power plant at Shin-Kori, and the new reactor is the prototype for reactors to be built in the United Arab Emirates through a joint project with Korea. Construction for Shin-Kori 3 and 4 started in 2007 and the plants are scheduled for completion in 2013 and 2014, respectively. By 2014, Korea will possess 26 commercial reactors that will account for 37.4 percent of the nation’s total power generation capacity. At present, 20 reactors are operating at four sites. Vice Minister Kim expressed great enthusiasm for the new reactor, calling its establishment a milestone for Korea in its endeavor to become one of the world’s major nuclear exporters. He also praised the workers and their dedication to the success of the project. * For more information on Korea’s nuclear industry, please see the special report dated January 25. * Released by the Nuclear Power Industry Division |
